STEM initiatives : inspiring women and girls

Our society is inching toward a future when the phrase "you code like a girl" will be a compliment of the highest order.

But there are significant hurdles before we get there. The statistics behind women in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) are still far from indicating an even playing field.

According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, female employees fill fewer than 25% of STEM jobs — even though they make up nearly half of the overall workforce. Skype will soon be adding : Free Group Video Calling

Microsoft will soon add free group video calls to Skype's iOS, Android and Windows 10 mobile apps, the company announced Tuesday. The update is expected to roll out to Skype's respective apps "over the next few weeks."

Once it's live, the update will allow Skype users to make video calls with as many as 25 participants for free. While Skype has supported group video calls for some time, the feature was previously available only to those who subscribed to Skype for Business (though the free apps have supported group audio calls.)

It's not clear exactly when the feature will roll out to each app but Microsoft says it's coming soon. Microsoft is also offering the chance to get your hands on it ahead of its release to those who sign up for a preview version on its website. The company announced the update in a blog post commemorating the service's 10-year anniversary (yes, it's okay if that makes you feel old.)

Samsung Galaxy Alpha Is Ready to Fight the iPhone 6

Apple hasn't even announced the iPhone 6 yet, but Samsung is already poised to attack it with a new smartphone design: the Galaxy Alpha.

The Samsung Galaxy Alpha, which has been rumored for a while, has excellent specs as well as a new design that brandishes a chamfered metal edge, just like the current iPhone 5S.

The one feature that doesn't make sense on its own is the screen size; Samsung opted to give the Galaxy Alpha a 4.7-inch HD (1,280 x 720) display, which is a little on the small side when stacked against today's flagships like the LG G3 and Samsung's own Galaxy S5.
