Facebook Hiring Editors for Secret Mobile Newsreader App, Report Says

Facebook has been on the prowl for editors to curate its Flipboard-like mobile news aggregator, according to a report from Re/code.

The editors would be tasked with hand picking the best stories for a variety of topics that will then be presented to readers, a marked change from Facebook's previous reliance on algorithms, Re/code reported. Reps from Facebook could not be reached for comment on the report.

Various reports that Facebook was developing a newsreader similar to Flipboard have circulated for more than six months. The company has never publicly acknowledged the project.

The introduction of a personal touch to Facebook's content selection would complicate an already murky situation. Tweaks to Facebook's News Feed algorithm had a profound impact on businesses, media producers and marketers who rely on the social network for traffic and exposure. While some sites like Buzzfeed and Mashable benefitted from the change, other companies reported a drop off in exposure.

Tacking on a news reader to its mobile experience is a plausible move for Facebook though since LinkedIn and Yahoo have done the same with Pulse and Yahoo News Digest, respectively.

When reached for comment, a Facebook spokesperson said: "We do not comment on rumors and speculation."
