Motorola has marked its return to the Indian market after an absence of two years with the hotly anticipated Moto G smartphone. The model has been launched in the country at a price point of Rs 12,499 for the 8GB variant and Rs 13,999 for the 16GB model.
The phone will be exclusively available on e-commerce website, Flipkart, on launch day. The phone is already been listed on the website, and will be available for sale from February 6. Motorola has said that Moto G will remain exclusive to Flipkart "for the foreseeable future."
Launched in the last months of 2013 in several markets, Moto G sports a 4.5-inch screen with a 720p resolution. It is powered by a middle-of-line Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor running at 1.2GHz. The device comes with 8GB and 16GB storage options and has 1GB RAM. The primary camera can shoot images in 5MP, while the secondary camera is 1.3MP.
The new Motorola smartphone runs Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean), but Motorola has promised that it will receive the Android 4.4 KitKat update "in a matter of days." The phone does not feature any software customizations and Motorola has promised early access to Android updates for it.
At the launch event, Motorola executives hinted that Moto X coming to India is a possibility, but they refrained from giving a concrete timeframe for the same.
Motorola faces a tall order in India, where global leader Samsung and home-bred brand Micromax have captured the lion's share of the market. Not only does the company need to penetrate the growing but burgeoning market, but also raise its brand value after remaining away from India for two years.
